Collections Management

The aim of the Collections Management component of the Museums Assistance Program (MAP) is to improve professional knowledge, skills and practices, and to strengthen professional standards related to key museum functions for collections management. It also supports organizations in the development and delivery of resources or services that will benefit multiple museums.

The deadline to submit applications for 2016-2017 projects to the Collections Management component is November 1, 2015.

Eligible Applicants

To be eligible under the Collections Management component, applicants must meet the criteria of one of the following two categories:

  • Incorporated non-profit Canadian museums which:
    • Provide services to the public year-round;
    • Employ the equivalent of one full-time paid professional staff;
    • Have policies for key museum functions; and
    • Have a current three to five-year strategic/business plan; and
  • Incorporated non-profit service organizations whose membership relates to the museum sector.

Eligible museums that are governed by other levels of government or by academic or cultural institutions must have distinct objectives, programs and budgets related to heritage. Federal departments, Crown corporations and agencies are not eligible for MAP funding.

Application Process

Project proposals are reviewed competitively once each year. Completed application forms must be sent no later than the application deadline date. Hard copies sent by mail or courier, or hand-delivered, must be postmarked by the deadline date. If the application is sent electronically, the embedded sent date must be no later than local time on the deadline date.

Direct your application package to the nearest regional office of the Department of Canadian Heritage or, for national organizations, to the national office. It is also highly recommended that you consult your regional program officer to discuss your project prior to submission.
