Speaking Notes for The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages On the occasion of a Funding Announcement for the Port Moody Heritage Society

Port Moody, British Columbia
October 3, 2010

Good afternoon.

I am pleased to be here with you today and to take part in this year's Ioco Ghost Town Days in Port Moody.

Every year, the Ioco Ghost Town Days festival provides opportunities for Canadians to get involved in their community. Festivals like this bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and contribute to a stronger local economy.

As you may know, the Government of Canada is taking action throughout the country to stimulate our economy. And that includes the arts and cultural sectors.

Our Government is building stronger communities by providing opportunities for Canadians to celebrate Canadian arts and heritage.

Today, I am pleased to announce that we will provide $3,700 to support the Port Moody Heritage Society in staging these important community celebrations.

Thanks to the financial support from the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program, citizens of Port Moody will enjoy diverse presentations by local artists, artisans, and historical heritage performers.

Our Government is proud to partner with organizations to support activities that celebrate local arts and heritage, while strengthening community ties. This event is as much a celebration of culture as it is of local history. It also contributes to the vitality of the region's culture and economy.

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting activities that enrich the cultural life of our communities.

In addition to giving artists the opportunity to express their creativity, this festival strengthens our communities and enhances Canadians' quality of life. We are proud to support this festival and we wish you the greatest success.

The Ioco Ghost Town Days promotes a strong sense of pride among members of our community and demonstrates our commitment to celebrating Canada's rich history and diverse culture.

I commend the event organizers and volunteers for their ongoing commitment and dedication. Your hard work is important and very much appreciated.

I look forward to this year's Ioco Ghost Town Days and offer my best wishes for its success.
