Speaking Notes for The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages On the occasion of a Funding Announcement for the Fraser River Discovery Centre

New Westminster, British Columbia
September 25, 2010

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am pleased to be here with you on behalf of the Government of Canada to take part in this year's BC Rivers Day Festival in New Westminster.

Every year, the BC Rivers Day Festival provides opportunities for Canadians to get involved in their community. Festivals like this bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and contribute to a stronger local economy.

As you may know, the Government of Canada is taking action throughout the country to stimulate our economy. And that includes the arts and culture sector.

Our Government is building stronger communities by providing opportunities for Canadians to celebrate our country's arts and heritage.

Today, I am pleased to announce that the Government of Canada will provide $13,600 to support the Fraser River Discovery Centre in staging these important community celebrations.

Thanks to the financial support from the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program, citizens of New Westminster will enjoy diverse presentations by local artists, artisans, and historians.

Our Government is proud to partner with organizations to support activities that celebrate local arts and heritage, while strengthening community ties. This event is as much a celebration of culture as it is of local history. It also contributes to the vitality of the region's culture and economy.

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting activities that enrich the cultural life of our communities.

In addition to giving artists the opportunity to express their creativity, this festival strengthens our communities and enhances Canadians' quality of life. We are proud to support this festival and we wish you the greatest success.

The BC Rivers Day Festival promotes a strong sense of pride within this community and demonstrates a commitment to celebrating Canada's rich history and diverse culture.

The Fraser River Discovery Centre brings communities together by providing visitors with opportunities to learn more about this important river and its stories.

I commend the event organizers and volunteers for their ongoing commitment and dedication. Your hard work is important and very much appreciated.

I look forward to this year's festival and offer my best wishes for its success. Thank you!
