Minister Moore Invites Canadians to Celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the National Flag of Canada

VANCOUVER, February 15, 2010 -
- The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, invites Canadians to join together on Monday, February 15, for the 45th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada. Minister Moore took part earlier today in a celebration at the Canada Pavilion in Vancouver.

The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport) is celebrating this important Canadian symbol in Whistler, British Columbia. There are also events scheduled in St. John's, Newfoundland; Winnipeg, Manitoba; and Ottawa, Ontario.

"On this day 45 years ago, the red and white Maple Leaf flag was first raised on Parliament Hill, across Canada, and at Canadian missions around the world. Today, our distinctive flag is cherished by Canadians and admired throughout the world as a symbol of freedom, democracy, rule of law, and human rights," said Minister Moore.

Proclaimed in 1996, National Flag of Canada Day provides Canadians with the opportunity to pay homage to our cherished Maple Leaf flag.

To support the celebration of this special day, the Government of Canada designed a new National Flag of Canada Day Poster highlighting the history of the flag. The Government of Canada has a number of educational materials about the flag's symbolism, flag etiquette, and facts about the flag. A new webpage is also being launched featuring an interactive timeline, allowing visitors to learn about the history and development of the Canadian flag throughout the years. These resources are available on the Department of Canadian Heritage website at http://www.canadianheritage.gc.ca/flagday.
