Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of Global Youth Service Day

OTTAWA, April 23, 2010 -
- Recognized in over 100 countries, Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates the millions of young people who improve their communities every day of the year. Today, it is the largest service event in the world.

Our Government firmly believes that a strong attachment to Canada unites Canadians in a common purpose and enables us to succeed as individuals and as a nation. By supporting young Canadians in activities that allow them to be active citizens, together we can build a strong nation for our future. Our Government invests in youth programs that give young Canadians more opportunities to get personally involved in activities that strengthen their attachment to Canada.

We all have our part to play in supporting the leaders of tomorrow in this process. Schools and organizations provide training and technical assistance, grants, and resources. Media and policy makers promote the role of young people as assets to our communities, our country, and our world.

I know Canadians share a sense of pride in our great country. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I invite all Canadians to recognize Global Youth Service Day. Young Canadians with incredible talents, experiences, and perspectives will ensure that Canada continues to be a strong and proud country.
