Government of Canada Invests in Théâtre du Nouveau Monde
MONTRÉAL, September 1, 2009 - - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Andrée Champagne, Senator, today announced that the Government of Canada is investing $1,983,106 in the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde to support its project to upgrade the theatre.
"Our Government is aware that the arts and culture sector plays a major role in our economy," said Minister Moore. "That is why we invest in projects that not only create more welcoming venues conducive to expressing our culture, but invigorate Canada's economy, as well."
"We are proud to support a pillar of Francophone theatre," said Senator Champagne. "Investing in the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde is providing our playwrights, directors, and actors with an environment that fosters creativity. Through its choice of high quality classical and contemporary works, the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde promotes the reputation of our artists, while treating audiences to a rich theatrical repertory."
"Theatre artists write the future in the present. They are part of the shared adventure that makes the visible appear from the invisible. As Boris Vian wrote, they are builders of an empire. Their theatres nurture their dreams and those of the audience. This is why we must dare to create new worlds," said Lorraine Pintal, Artistic and Executive Director of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. "Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada, the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde will be able to ensure that its creative spaces and stage equipment are upgraded and can offer creators a playing field on the same level as their visionary talent."
The Government of Canada has provided this support through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (formerly Cultural Spaces Canada). This program of the Department of Canadian Heritage seeks to improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and arts presentation or exhibition. It is also designed to increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts, and to museum collections and heritage displays.
