Harper Government Invests in Culture in Alberta

CALGARY, January 21, 2012 - Canada's newly designated Cultural Capital for 2012 and other communities in Alberta will receive important support that will create jobs and strengthen Alberta's economy, thanks to investments from the Government of Canada. Support for 39 projects throughout Alberta was announced today by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Minister Moore made the announcement at the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts, in the presence of leaders from Alberta's cultural community.

Funding will support a wide range of projects that will strengthen the economy, increase tourism, and build on the cultural strength of Calgary and communities across southern Alberta. Organizations receiving support include the Medicine Hat Jazz Fest, the Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival, Lethbridge ArtsDays, the Theatre Junction Society, the Mount Royal University Conservatory, and the 100th anniversary of the Village of Chauvin.

"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in organizations that boost tourism and create jobs and growth," said Minister Moore. "By supporting these organizations, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and at the same time support arts, culture and official languages throughout Alberta."

"The Canada Arts Presentation Fund is a vital partner for our organization. It supports our mandate to bring to this community the best contemporary performing artists from Canada and around the world," said Tod Petersen, Managing Director, Theatre Junction GRAND. "With today's announcement of multi-year support for Theatre Junction's artistic program, the Government of Canada has instantly enabled us to do more for the citizens of Calgary."

The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $1,653,582 through seven programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Aboriginal Women's Programming Elements and the Cultural Connections for Aboriginal Youth components of the Aboriginal Peoples' Program, the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Arts Training Fund, the Support for Organizations component of the Canada Book Fund, the Aid to Publishers component of the Canada Periodical Fund, and the Cooperation with the Community Sector component of the Development of Official Languages Communities Program. For more information about the projects, see the attached backgrounder.
