Sport: Canada, A Creative Nation
Canada is a proud sport nation with a history of athletic accomplishment at the highest levels of competition. Our country offers Canadians a wealth of options to choose from when it comes to getting involved in sport from our playgrounds to the podiums of major sport events, such as the Paralympic and Olympic Games.
Many Canadians from all segments of society are involved in quality sport activities at all levels and in all forms of participation. For many of us, sport is part of a healthy, active lifestyle.
Some of us strive to join the ranks of Canada's greats and develop into high-performance athletes, following our passion and talent to the highest summits of amateur sport or to the world of professional sport teams.
Canada's pool of talented athletes has expanded significantly year after year, and Canadian athletes and teams are achieving world-class results. Who can forget Canada's record-breaking gold-medal haul at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics—where Canada's Olympic winter athletes won more gold medals than any other country in the history of the Winter Games? The gold medals we won at the 2010 Winter Olympics were our first ever at an Olympic Games hosted in Canada, despite having hosted the Olympics twice before—in Montréal in 1976 and in Calgary in 1988. And we cannot be more proud of our Paralympic athletes who also outdid themselves in Vancouver, placing third in the gold-medal count at the first Paralympic Winter Games to be held in Canada, owning the podium like we never have before.
Here you can find out more about amateur sport and its links to the life of Canadians, as well as more information on how the Government of Canada supports Canadian athletes, sport organizations, coaches and others in support of sport excellence in world-class competition.
