About the Team - International and Intergovernmental Affairs

The International and Intergovernmental Affairs Branch works to ensure that the Department’s international and intergovernmental activities contribute to and support the objectives of Canadian Heritage and the Government of Canada.

Through collaboration with other departments such as the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Portfolio Organizations (e.g. Canada Council for the Arts, Telefilm Canada), the Branch strives to position Canada prominently in both multilateral organizations (e.g. UNESCO, La Francophonie, Organization of American States) and in bilateral engagements with priority countries to enhance Canadian influence. Canada has over 15 memoranda of understandings with other countries in the field of culture and sport.

Similarly, the Branch engages with other levels of Canadian government to promote greater alignment and cooperation between both federal and provincial/territorial partners active in culture and sport.

The International and Intergovernmental Affairs Branch has four units:

  • International and Intergovernmental Policy
  • Bilateral Relations
  • Multilateral Relations
  • Intergovernmental Affairs
