Harper Government Invests in Saskatchewan’s Economy

REGINA, July 20, 2012 - Investments in the arts, culture, youth and official-language sectors are helping boost the economy and create jobs and growth in Saskatchewan. Support for 75 projects was announced today by Tom Lukiwski, Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament (Regina–Lumsden–Lake Centre), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

The funding supports a range of organizations, projects and festivals across the province, that share the common goal of providing visitors and residents of Saskatchewan with rich cultural experiences. Groups and initiatives receiving support include the All Folk’d Up In Montmartre Folk Festival, the Stenen 100th Anniversary Homecoming, New Dance Horizons, the Mackenzie Art Gallery, and le Conseil de la Coopération de la Saskatchewan Ltée.

“This year marks the five-year countdown to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017,” said Minister Moore.  “Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous and free country we are today.”

“I’m proud our Government is investing in such important projects initiated by so many Saskatchewan organizations,” said Mr. Lukiwski. “We know that by investing in arts, culture, youth and Francophone community organizations, we are not only contributing to the cultural vitality of our communities but also enriching the quality of life of all Canadians.”

“The wide range of great projects supported by the Government of Canada illustrates the vibrancy of our culture and affirms how essential public investment is to the sector,” said Jeremy Morgan, Interim Executive Director of the Mackenzie Art Gallery. “This substantial support is crucial to public access and community well-being, and is very much appreciated.”

The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $4,573,132 under five programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program, the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Museums Assistance Program, the Official Languages Support Programs, and the Exchanges Canada Program – Youth Forums Canada program.
