Harper Government Invests in the Sectors of Arts, Heritage, Culture and Official Languages in Greater Montréal and Surrounding Areas

MONTRÉAL, July 24, 2012 - New investments in the sectors of arts, culture, heritage and official languages will promote economic growth in Greater Montréal and surrounding areas. Funding for 87 projects was announced today by the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry and Minister of State (Agriculture), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

The funding will assist a wide range of organizations and projects that share the objective of supporting official languages, heritage, and arts and culture in Canada. Among the recipients are the Festival International de Percussions, the Musée pour Enfants de Laval, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Girls Action Foundation, the Endowment Fund of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Foundation.

“This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 2017,” said Minister Moore. “Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all that makes Canada the united, prosperous and free country we are today.”

“Our Government recognizes the importance of supporting these organizations. By putting the spotlight on our culture, heritage and official languages, they contribute to the economic vitality of the area,” added Minister Paradis. “We are pleased to contribute to the success of these renowned organizations.”

“The Endowment Incentives component of the Canada Cultural Investment Fund is an invaluable tool for our Foundation,”  said Mrs. Madeleine Careau, Chief Executive Officer of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. “The mission of the Foundation is to support the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal in achieving its artistic goals and to ensure the long-term viability of this Canadian treasure we are all so proud of.”

The Government of Canada has provided a total of $12,867,720 under the following programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Development of Official-Language Communities Program, the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program, the Museums Assistance Program, the Canada Book Fund, the Canada Cultural Investment Fund, the Canada Arts Presentation Fund and the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the Canada Music Fund, Aboriginal Women’s Programming, the Exchanges Canada Program, and the Youth Take Charge Program.
