Harper Government Supports New Exhibit in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia, August 10, 2012 - The Fraser–Fort George Museum Society is hosting a new travelling exhibition this fall, thanks to support from the Government of Canada. This was announced today by Bob Zimmer, Member of Parliament (Prince George–Peace River), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

With this funding, the Fraser–Fort George Museum Society will present “Let’s Go! Animals in Motion” at the Exploration Place Museum and Science Centre in Prince George from September 15, 2012 to January 15, 2013. This bilingual exhibition is borrowed from the Sherbrooke Museum of Science and Nature and focuses on animal life and biodiversity. The exhibition is geared toward families and youth and includes the development and implementation of programs for children and the public.

“This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017,” said Minister Moore. “Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous, and free country we are today.”

“Our Government is pleased to be supporting this exhibition here in Prince George,” said Mr. Zimmer. “Educational exhibitions like this one play an important part in providing a unique and participatory learning experience for families and children of all ages.”

“The Museums Assistance Program is absolutely critical to the success of our Exhibit Program here at the Exploration Place Museum and Science Centre,” said Tracy Calogheros, CEO. “MAP funding allows us to bring world-class touring exhibits to our region that connect our visitors to contemporary science and current issues and provide first-person experiences with national and international historical treasures. Without the assistance of the federal government, we would be unable to provide this quality of programming and level of access for the citizens of Northern British Columbia.”

Since 1958, the Fraser–Fort George Museum Society has been gathering and preserving information and records to create and sustain a unique participatory museum of regional history, science, and technology in Prince George. The Society is committed to providing learning opportunities that foster an understanding of significant past and current issues shaping Canada’s economy and that link experiences within the Regional District of Fraser–Fort George to Canada and the world.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $15,000 through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
