Harper Government Invests in Culture in Sudbury
SUDBURY, Ontario, August 14, 2012 - Investments by the Harper Government in cultural organizations in Sudbury are helping create jobs and stimulate the economy. Support for 13 projects was announced today by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
These investments will support a wide variety of organizations that share the goal of boosting tourism and strengthening the local economy while providing the people of Sudbury with unique cultural experiences in their communities. Organizations receiving funding include Sudbury Summerfest Foundation, the Sudbury Celtic Festival and Highland Games, the Northern Lights Festival Boréal, and the Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury.
“This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017,” said Minister Moore. “Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous, and free country we are today.”
“In addition to providing a multiplying effect, Canadian Heritage’s contribution has a very real benefit for the Carrefour francophone,” said Stéphane Gauthier, Executive and Cultural Director of the Carrefour francophone de Sudbury. “Thanks to the contribution from the Development of Official-Language Communities Program, the Carrefour francophone de Sudbury will be able to do more to continue diversifying and increasing public participation in its many artistic and cultural activities for Francophone families and those in immersion. Our cultural centre will also be able to pursue new initiatives to create and strengthen partnerships in this vibrant community.”
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $604,994 through five programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Book Fund, the Canada Periodical Fund, and the Development of Official-Language Communities Program.
