Harper Government Invests in Winnipeg’s Art and Culture Scene
WINNIPEG, January 22, 2013 - Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages announced support for five arts and cultural projects in Winnipeg. These investments will help boost the economy and create jobs and growth in Manitoba.
“Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in our economic future,” said Minister Toews. “By supporting these important projects, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy, boost tourism and support arts and culture.”
The funding supports a range of organizations and projects that share the goal of providing Manitobans with rich cultural experiences. The Winnipeg International Children’s Festival, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Gas Station Arts Centre, Storyline FX, and Virtuosi Concerts (MB) will all receive support.
“Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians,” said Minister Moore. “On the road to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, let us celebrate all the things that make Canada the united, strong and free country we are today.”
“Connecting symphony orchestras with new audiences, new music and new approaches to serving the public remains one of the biggest challenges and opportunities of our time,” said Trudy Schroeder, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. “The support from the Government of Canada is instrumental in encouraging new voices on our stages and new audience members in our concert venues. We have been able to increase audiences of different generations and collaborate with new partners in innovative programs that make us all stronger and able to understand each other better.”
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $283,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. For more information about the projects, see the attached backgrounder.
