Harper Government Invests in War of 1812 Commemorations in Brockville
BROCKVILLE, Ontario, January 25, 2013 - Today, Gordon Brown, Member of Parliament (Leeds–Grenville), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, announced funding for the City of Brockville to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.
With this support, Brockville will offer a weekend-long series of activities to commemorate the War of 1812 on June 15 and 16, 2013. These activities will include two re-enactments: a First Nations encampment and a Brockville Infantry encampment. It is expected that up to 20,000 people will attend this event.
“We are proud to invest in these activities, which will highlight the role that Brockville played in this defining moment of our history,” said Mr. Brown. “This will provide an opportunity to learn more about the heroes who defended our land in the Fight for Canada.”
“Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians,” said Minister Moore. “On the road to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, let us celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, strong, and free country we are today.”
“The 1812 Brockville signature commemoration of this war enables our river city to create a sustaining annual tourism festival aligned to the community’s strongest promotional assets, being our heritage and the mighty St. Lawrence River,” said David Henderson, Mayor of Brockville.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $30,000 to the City of Brockville through Canadian Heritage’s 1812 Commemoration Fund. The Fund supports community-based projects to foster greater awareness and understanding of the importance of this conflict.
