Frequently Asked Questions

Students/Graduates

How does the Young Canada Works (YCW) program work?

YCW funds summer jobs and internships that a variety of Employers have submitted to YCW Delivery Organizations (third-party organizations that deliver the YCW program). Upon evaluation and approval, the positions are posted on the YCW website. YCW does not hire students or graduates directly. It is the Employer's responsibility to hire students or graduates, although we strongly encourage students and recent graduates to apply directly to any job that interests them.

If you are selected for a position, you will be required to complete the following online forms and reports over the duration of your summer job/internship:

  • Candidate Eligibility Form: (initiated by your Employer) to confirm your eligibility to participate. This must be completed before you are hired by your Employer.
  • Staffing Report: (initiated by your Employer) to ensure that the details of your job are accurate. This information must be confirmed during your first week of work.
  • End of Work Term Report: to ensure your job/internship has successfully ended. This must be completed on your last day of work.
  • Evaluation Questionnaire: to provide feedback regarding the program. This must be completed at the end of your employment.

If you have any questions about these obligations, please talk to your Employer. There are instructions for all forms and reports within your YCW account.

Am I eligible to participate in YCW?
How do I apply to the program and is there a deadline?

You can apply to the program by visiting the YCW Login Page and clicking on the "Click here to create a YCW account!" link. You will be required to enter contact information and details on your educational/work history. Once you have created your account, you can browse job opportunities via the Job Postings link in your YCW account. To express your interest in a position, click on a Job Title and then the appropriate checkbox.

Please note that Young Canada Works does not hire students or graduates directly. It is the Employer's responsibility to hire current students or recent graduates for their YCW funded position(s). However, we strongly encourage you to apply directly to any job that interests you.

There is no deadline for students or interns to apply, but is recommended that you create an account and submit your candidacy before the summer.

I'm disabled; what are my options?

If you have a disability, you may be eligible for part-time work. Talk to your potential Employer, or contact us at PCH.coordonnateurjct-ycwcoordinator.PCH@canada.ca for more information.

Can I receive EI (Employment Insurance) benefits during my job/internship?

Students and graduates cannot be receiving Employment Insurance (EI) while employed under YCW.

I've participated in YCW before. Can I apply again?
  • For Summer Jobs: yes, you may participate again. However, priority will be given to new applicants.
  • For Internships: YCW candidates must not have previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. However, if you previously participated in one of YCW Summer Jobs program, you may apply to the Internships programs.
Can I work in a different city/province/territory?

Yes. If you wish to work in a different location than your permanent residence, search the YCW Job Postings within your YCW account. You can specify your search by city, province or territory.

Note:

For the Young Canada Works in Both Official Languages program, priority will be given to students who must travel at least 125 km from their permanent residence to their job site.

Can I get reimbursed for my travel and/or accommodation costs?

YCW in Both Official Languages will offer a housing allowance and will cover the travel costs for one round trip between the student's residence and the job location for students who travel more than 125 km from their residence to their summer job.

YCW in Heritage Organizations may cover transportation costs for students who travel more than 125km from their primary residence to their summer job.

For Canadian internships (YCW at Building Careers in Heritage) outside the province in which the intern resides, YCW will cover transportation costs between the intern's residence and the job location.

For international internships, YCW will cover transportation and part of accommodation costs abroad. YCW at Building Careers in English and French only offers international internships. YCW at Building Careers in Heritage also offers international internships.

Note:

Applications for travel assistance are made through your Employer or your delivery organization.

Employers

How does the Young Canada Works (YCW) program work?

YCW provides funding to Employers in order to create summer jobs for students and internships for recent graduates. Ultimately, YCW aims to provide Canadian youth with an opportunity to gain the skills, experience, and ability they require to enter Canada's workforce.

In order to acquire YCW funding, an Employer must complete and submit an application, which outlines the position(s) they wish to create for a student/intern. These details consist of the organization and supervisor's contact information, the job's details (i.e., the proposed project/job and how the YCW participant, Employer, and community [if applicable] will benefit from the experience), and a budget to indicate the project/job costs and the amount requested from YCW. Once you have completed an application, it will be submitted to a specific Delivery Organization.

There are 12 Delivery Organizations that deliver the four YCW programs. Employers should choose a Delivery Organization with a mandate closest to that of their organization or the organization responsible for delivering YCW in your region. Click here to visit the Delivery Organization directory – you can click on the name of a Delivery Organization to visit its website, review their mandate, and determine whether it fits with yours. If you are uncertain about which Delivery Organization to choose, please contact one for further information.

Once the Delivery Organization has received your application, it will be reviewed and evaluated. Click here for more information on what to do if you are approved or refused for YCW funding.

It is also strongly recommended to read the YCW Employer Guide (PDF Format, 540 KB) prior to engaging in the program. The Guide will prepare Employers for the application process, approved Employer obligations, and provide further information on the YCW programs.
