The Government of Canada is the largest single contributor to sport in this country, providing funding for initiatives to support our high-performance athletes and to promote sport participation among all Canadians.
Through Sport Canada funding programs, the Government of Canada provides financial support to national sport organizations and athletes to prepare for major competitions such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games. In addition, support is provided to the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee, the organizations responsible for sending our teams to Sochi.
Government of Canada funding for the Canadian sport system and athletes is at an all-time high of almost $200 million per year.
Each year, Sport Canada’s Sport Support Program provides about $146 million to Canadian sport organizations to strengthen our national sport system and benefit our athletes and coaches. Of this amount, approximately $62 million is provided as enhanced excellence funding for targeted sports and athletes with medal potential at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, based on recommendations made by Own the Podium.
Sport Canada’s Athlete Assistance Progra(AAP) also provides $28 million each year in direct funding to approximately 1800 Canadian athletes, giving them financial assistance to achieve world-class results.
Additionally, the Hosting Program is a key instrument in the Government of Canada’s overall approach to sport development in Canada and aims to enhance the development of sport excellence and the international profile of sport organizations by assisting sport organizations to host the Canada Games and international sport events in Canada.
