Harper Government Invests in New Brunswick’s Arts and Culture Scene

MONCTON, February 22, 2013 - Today, the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, announced new investments by the Government of Canada in 26 arts and culture organizations in New Brunswick.

“Our Government recognizes the importance and impact of investing in arts and culture organizations in communities across Canada,” said Minister Fletcher. “This financial support is a great booster for the local economy and helps recipients promote and showcase local and nationally recognized artists at cultural events across New Brunswick throughout the year. Our Government will continue to support the arts sector throughout Canada as it continues to play a vital role in creating jobs and strengthening our economy.”

This funding will support a range of organizations and projects that share the goal of providing New Brunswick’s residents and visitors with rich cultural experiences. The Imperial Theatre, the Festival des arts visuels en Atlantique, the Westmorland Historical Society, Productions de l’Étoile, the Société culturelle des Hauts-Plateaux, and the Albert Agricultural Society are among the organizations receiving support for their projects.

“Our Government is pleased to support organizations that help strengthen our shared identity and define who we are as Canadians, from coast to coast to coast,” said Minister Moore. “By investing in events that rely strongly on the work and dedication of volunteers and that allow local artists and artisans to express their talent and skill, we are helping make our communities more prosperous and dynamic.”

“Production de l’Étoile is pleased to receive this support from the Government of Canada,” said Rachel Arseneau-Ferguson, President of the organization. “It allows the Théâtre populaire d’Acadie to renew some of its equipment and to ensure the technical quality of its touring performances, as well as to be able to regularly welcome companies from other regions of Canada, which will enrich the programming offered to audiences.”

The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $700,929 to 26 projects through three programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, and the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund.
