Harper Government Supports the Festi Jazz International de Rimouski

RIMOUSKI, Quebec, May 23, 2013 - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced funding for the 28th Festi Jazz international de Rimouski, which will take place from August 29 to September 1, 2013.

“The Festi Jazz international de Rimouski has transformed this beautiful region of Quebec into a true crossroads for music lovers, musicians from the area and beyond, and jazz aficionados,” said Minister Moore. “Its contribution to the economic and cultural vitality of Rimouski is undeniable. This is why our Government is proud to support this music event known for its spontaneity and element of surprise.”

The Festi Jazz International aims to encourage residents of eastern Quebec to take part in top-quality jazz performances, promote awareness of this musical genre, and enrich the cultural life of this region that is far removed from major urban centres. This funding will make it possible for established artists to perform, and will help provide a showcase for emerging artists. In addition to jazz and emerging music performances, the festival includes family activities and local painters who create jazz-themed works.

“The financial support of the Government of Canada is fundamental in organizing the Festi Jazz International de Rimouski, an event cherished by residents of Rimouski and part of the cultural landscape of eastern Quebec for over 27 years,” said Frédéric Lagacé, Administrative Director of Festi Jazz. “This contribution will improve the programming of the festival with more local artists and promote residents’ sense of belonging to the Rimouski region and surrounding areas.”

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $23,600 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate the history and heritage of a region.
