Protocol and ceremonial

  • administration of the Table of Precedence for Canada (instrument of protocol established by the Sovereign to regulate the relative precedence of the various actors within the Canadian Federation);

  • administration of the Table of Titles to be used in Canada (instrument of protocol established by the Sovereign to regulate titles in Canada);

  • flying of the Canadian flag and other flags in Canada, including the establishment and administration of rules of etiquette for the flying and displaying of flags, as well as the flying of flags at half mast on federal government buildings and establishments at the death of a Canadian dignitary or of a person the Government of Canada would like to honour in such a manner;

  • development of guidelines for state protocol and procedures to be followed at events organized by the federal government;

  • advice on protocol and ceremonial to federal departments and agencies, to the provinces and territories, and to the general public; the Program has prepared a Ceremonial and Protocol Handbook to assist with this function.
