Trade Routes: Taking Canadian Arts and Culture to the World

NOTICE

The Government of Canada, through regular reviews of all programs spending in federal departments and agencies, is taking a more prudent approach to managing spending in order to deliver programs that are efficient and effective and that meet the priorities of Canadians.

The Trade Routes program was not efficient for artists or taxpayers. Therefore, as of March 31, 2009, the Government of Canada is no longer financing contributions under the Trade Routes program. Trade Routes will continue to offer reduced support and services to its clients until March 31, 2010.

The portfolio organizations and delivery partners of the Department of Canadian Heritage, including Canada Council for the Arts, Telefilm Canada and the Association for the Export of Canadian Books will continue to offer programs that have an international component. As well, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade will continue to offer support for Canadian artists and cultural entrepreneurs through its Trade Commissioner Service across Canada and abroad, through its network of diplomatic missions, cultural attachés and trade commissioners.

What is Trade Routes?

Trade Routes is a comprehensive trade development program specifically designed for Canada's arts and cultural sector. The program helps profit and not-for-profit organizations in the arts and cultural sector prepare to export and sell in international markets.

In particular, the program offers access to market research, trade experts in Canada, and financial support.

Is Trade Routes for me?

Trade Routes helps profit and not-for-profit organizations in the arts and cultural sector, in the areas of crafts, design, film and television, heritage, new media, performing arts, publishing, sound recording and visual arts.

How do I get started?

If you are new to exporting, visit the New to exporting? section to learn more about what's involved. You can also learn how to develop an export plan or a strategic international business development plan (for associations).

You will need a draft or final export plan to access the services of Trade Routes.

If you have a draft or final export plan and are ready to export, visit the Services in Canada section to find out how Trade Routes experts can help you.

Industry advisory group

Trade Routes consults regularly with an industry advisory group on cultural trade: Trade Team Canada – Cultural Goods and Services. You can access the group's international trade action plans and comment on them.
