Vancouver 2010

In preparation for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Government of Canada, through Sport Canada, provides enhanced excellence support to targeted National Sport Organizations and Canadian Sport Centres through the Own the Podium 2010 (OTP) initiative.

Own the Podium 2010 is a winter sport technical initiative designed to help Canada become the number one nation (total medal count) at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and to place among the top three nations (gold medal count) at the 2010 Winter Paralympic Winter Games. The initiative is a partnership of Canada’s 13 winter sport organizations, Sport Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC).

The majority of the $110 million in funding, which began in 2005, originates from the Government of Canada ($66 million). VANOC is raising the balance ($44 million) through corporate, provincial, territorial and public support. Most of the Government of Canada’s funding is allocated directly to National Sport Organizations for coaching, athlete training and competion and equipment. In addition, funding is allocated to Canadian Sport Centres to provide sport science and sport medicine services to the NSOs and their athletes.

The tables that follow illustrate funding directed to Winter Olympic and Paralympic NSOs and athletes from all Sport Canada sources: Sport Support Program, Athlete Assistance Program, and the Hosting Program.
