Team Canada in Culture

The Games of La Francophonie are unique in that they are the only major games that feature both sport and cultural competitions. Like the athletes, the winning artists receive gold, silver or bronze medals.

In addition to cultural competitions, artists participate in creative workshops that allow them to meet, exchange ideas and forge special relationships with artists from various countries of La Francophonie.

The following artists represented Team Canada in the seven cultural competitions that were part of the 2009 Games of La Francophonie :

• Karkwa (Laval, QC) in song,
• Arleen Thibault (Quebec, QC) in storytelling,
• Virginie Brunelle (Montreal, QC) in original dance,
• Stéphanie Filion (Montreal, QC) in literature (short story),
• Benjamin Rodger (Ottawa, ON) in painting,
• Geneviève Thauvette (Ottawa, ON) in photography,
• and Sarah Beck (Saskatoon, SK) in sculpture.
