
The first edition of the Games of La Francophonie was held from July 8 to 22, 1989 in Morocco (in Rabat and Casablanca). The Games brought together some 1,800 participants from 30 states and governments of La Francophonie around the world. For 16 days, one and a half million spectators attended the various performances of the athletes and artists. Canada, the most heavily represented at the Games with a delegation of about 400 people among its three components, finished second after France in the medal rankings in the sporting competitions and first (in total medals) in the cultural competitions.
